About Sharkey

The ONE You Trust

Cyndi Sharkey is running for Mayor of Sandy City. You’ve voted for her in 2 landslide City Council At-Large elections. You know her work on behalf of Sandy residents and businesses citywide, and you know she has a track record of working for you.

First elected in 2020, she has served Sandy constituents through the headwinds of a global pandemic, drought, regional growth, and relentless inflation. Her record includes such important accomplishments as saving the Bulk Waste program, voting against four tax increases, creating innovative new policy to save the taxpayers millions of dollars, and expanding the Ethics Pledge of Fair Campaign Practices to reduce campaign signage. She’s fiscally responsible, working tirelessly in the best interests of Sandy taxpayers and businesses. She is endorsed by the Utah Taxpayer’s Association because Cyndi Sharkey looks out for your wallet – not into it.

Cyndi Sharkey has deep understanding of city services, budgeting, and planning. She has served as a Sandy City Planning Commissioner, and on a variety of committees and boards including Wasatch Front Waste and Recycling, Utah League of Cities and Towns, Jordan River Commission, Civic Center Architectural Committee, Association of Municipal Governments, Public Utilities Advisory Board, Convention Facilities Advisory Board, Sandy Arts Guild, and more. She has served as City Council Chair and Vice Chair and she was awarded the Sandy City 2017 Award for Outstanding Citizen Contribution.

Sharkey’s Bio

Cyndi Sharkey is a 25-year resident of the Willow Creek area. She is a veteran of the IT industry who was in corporate leadership (Vice President, and Regional Manager) before opening her own executive recruiting practice. She works with national clients in the IT solutions and services sector. As an executive recruiter, Cyndi has a deep understanding of how successful services organizations are managed and led.

She is a academic scholarship recipient and graduate of USC. She has two grown daughters who live and work in the Salt Lake County area.

Volunteer

Among numerous other volunteer activities, those who frequent Quail Hollow Park may recognize Cyndi as a frequent park visitor and “protector” of Big Rock. In partnership with Sandy Parks and Recreation, she has been working to eradicate graffiti on the giant 32 million-year-old granite boulder. Those persistent efforts have also been successful in reducing late night partying, bonfires, and trash at the site. She worked with University of Utah geology professors to determine that Big Rock traveled miles in a glacial event arriving at its current location about 50,000 years ago. It originates from the same granite quarry in Little Cottonwood Canyon whose stone built the Salt Lake Temple and Utah State Capitol.

She also volunteers at the Dimple Dell Park Earth Day cleanup and Sandy Beautification Day. Getting dirty is clearly no obstacle for Sharkey!

Why Sharkey

Why Am I Running for Mayor?

This may be the most important question you ask of any candidate. For me, it’s easy. I love Sandy and respect the residents, employees, and businesses who’ve made it into the great community in which we live, work, and play. From safe neighborhoods and beautiful parks; to recreation, entertainment, shopping and dining; to thriving employment, great schools, and engaged residents; we have all the elements for a prosperous and enjoyable quality of life in Sandy City.

Your Priorities = My Platform

A survey of residents revealed exactly what the community members value and prioritize about living in Sandy. Preserving a high quality of life, serving the needs of Sandy residents and businesses, and keeping taxes low are my consistent goals.

Safe
Neighborhoods

Our residents value this goal and I have supported it year after year by passing a balanced budget with public safety as the top priority. I voted in favor of a police pay raise during a time of cultural turmoil when officers were leaving the profession. I voted in favor of funding to increase the level of firefighter staffing, and I sponsored a budget amendment to set aside surplus budget dollars for that purpose without imposing a tax increase. I voted in favor of putting the construction of a new main Sandy fire station on the ballot for a vote of the people.

Parks, Recreation, and Open Space

Our residents value our proximity to the mountains and the recreation opportunities that abound in and around our city. I have voted in favor of budgets that expanded amenities (pickleball anyone?) and funded improvements and upgrades to city parks and trails. I voted in favor of a temporary moratorium and an updated ordinance regarding sensitive area development on the east bench. I sponsored an innovative plan to construct a new Alta Canyon Sports Center without a tax increase to Sandy residents and businesses.

Low
Taxes

Sandy residents and businesses have historically enjoyed some of the lowest property taxes in the Salt Lake Valley, but that’s changed over the past several years. I’ve voted against three property tax increases in three years, and one sales tax increase. Economic growth is the key to keeping taxes low and ensuring the continued delivery of high-quality city services. My background as a business executive, combined with 6 years as a City Council Member with a fiscally conservative voting record, means that my efforts are geared toward fostering economic growth, cutting wasteful spending, and building trusted partnerships, with the goal of making more Sandy affordable for our businesses and families.

Leadership for a Better Sandy

I want to get Sandy on a better course. Sandy deserves the best possible leadership. The last several years under the current mayor have ushered in record tax and fee increases in Sandy. The city budget has ballooned. Sandy needs a mayor that you can count on for fiscal restraint, not liberal spending. Sandy needs a mayor that you can trust to prioritize public service over public attention.

There are continued pressures ahead relative to growth, infrastructure, budgeting, taxes, housing, traffic, overcrowding, open space, quality of life, and economic vitality that must be addressed. It’s essential to adopt a precision approach that ensures preservation of the wonderful aspects of living and working in Sandy while facing the hurdles of population growth affecting the Wasatch Front.

Experience is essential in addressing these issues. My service as a Sandy City Planning Commissioner and City Council Member have prepared me for the weighty decisions ahead. My understanding of municipal organization, policy, budgets and practices gives me a valuable perspective. I broadly and thoroughly consider all issues before me, contemplating all viewpoints before rendering a decision. I’m known for persistently asking questions and collecting data.

Motivation is key in choosing your city officials in these challenging times. Think more deeply and vote more carefully than you ever have at this pivotal time. You’ll need to decide whether the candidates are in it for the public service or the public attention. Are they in it to build a better Sandy or build a better resume?
